Editors for the Good Schools Guide International are responsible for:

  • researching schools that might be added to the Guide
  • keeping abreast of developments at schools in the Guide
  •  visiting and writing up such schools in the host city
  • writing articles about local education generally, plus
  • how to survive there as an expat.

To enjoy doing this you will need to be:

A good networker. The first and key part of the job is finding and talking to people (often parents) who know the schools.

Passionate about education. Or you will find chatting about schools tedious after a while.

Intelligent. To keep your head up in headmagisterial company.

A good judge of people. You need to be able to get a feel for head, staff, pupils and parents in  the course of half a day.

Sufficiently courageous / thick-skinned. Schools will often be unchuffed by what you have written, and you need not to be cowed by that.

Articulate. The Guide is written in a chatty conversational style, full of anecdote and observation. You need to feel happy with that - and be able to write as well as talk that way.

In need of part time work. Guide work can be done as and when you want; there are no deadlines (unless you take on additional responsibilities). It will always be a very long way short of full time.
